Last update date: 2020-08-04 16:30The Academic Affairs Committee of the University of Hong Kong approved the immediate dismissal of Dai Yaoting last Tuesday (July 28) with a ratio of 18 to 2. Some commentators believe that this decision tramples on the "academic freedom" of universities-but is "academic freedom" the sacred iron law of unconstrained? In fact, whenever it conflicts with national security, social norms, and administrative systems, it will be re-delimited by the power organs. Does this “trample” the “academic freedom” of universities and colleges?
Looking back at the Dai Yaoting incident, in recent years, he has neither taken into consideration his social status as an associate professor of the University of Hong Kong nor the reputation of the University of Hong Kong. He initiated an illegal "occupation operation" in the communist field and should be held responsible for his actions. (Profile picture/Photo by Zhang Haowei)
Since the implementation of the "Minato National Security Law", how much space does Hong Kong's academic community still have for free research and expression? Will the living space of "academic freedom" be further affected? (Profile picture / Photo by Liang Pengwei)
The above is excerpted from the 225th issue of "Hong Kong 01" Weekly (August 3, 2020) "Analysis of "Dai Yaoting's Dismissal" "Academic Freedom" Becomes an "Umbrella" for Whatever You Want? ".
