Increasingly involved in accidents, these machines belonging to the EDPM category, just like Segways, Monowheels and Hoverboards, are subject to specific traffic rules.

EDPMs (motorized personal transport vehicles) are now added to the long list of vehicle categories defined in article R. 311-1 of the Highway Code.

They are designated as vehicles without a seat, designed and built for the movement of one person and without any fittings intended for the transport of goods.

They must be 0.90 meters (maximum) wide and 1.35 meters long.

They are equipped with a non-thermal engine or a non-thermal assistance and whose maximum speed by design is greater than 6 km / h and does not exceed 25 km / h.

They can be fitted with accessories (basket or small bag).

Many requirements for motorized users also apply to users of EDPMs.

It is in particular forbidden to drive under the influence of alcohol or after the use of narcotics and more generally the rules of the Highway Code apply to these drivers.

The use and wearing of earphones or any device likely to emit sound is prohibited, as is the use of a telephone held in the hand.

You must be at least 12 years old to assemble a motorized EDPM. Passenger transport is prohibited.

Since July 1, 2020, EDPMs must be equipped with front and rear position lights, rear and side retro-reflective devices, a braking system and a horn. They cannot have a seat unless they change vehicle category.

These motorized vehicles cannot circulate on the sidewalk (except to be held in the hand) but can be parked there without obstructing pedestrian traffic.
