In Paris, wearing a mask will become mandatory to prevent the resumption of the Covid-19 epidemic. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor (PS) of the capital made the request on Tuesday to Didier Lallement, the police prefect.
In recent weeks, while the various indicators indicate a worrying rise in the number of cases, Parisian elected officials have multiplied the recommendations on wearing a mask outdoors without being able to impose it. But since August 1, it is possible to make it compulsory and the mayor of Paris has decided to seize this opportunity.
Slow down a possible second wave
“The objective is to slow down the resumption of the epidemic. It is urgent to strengthen barrier actions in view of the rapid increase in the number of proven cases if we do not want to reach a new confinement. The movement has been slow but steady for a month. We are waiting for a second wave. It must be slowed down, ”explains Anne Souyris, EELV deputy to the mayor of Paris in charge of health.
The City asked the police chief to make the wearing of a mask compulsory in dense places. An order is hoped for by the town hall in the coming days.
“Discussions between the services of the police prefecture (PP) and those of the town hall of Paris took place to study the measures to be put in place in view of the evolution of epidemiological data, in particular that of wearing a mask in exterior ”, we confirm to the PP.
Quays of the Seine, Canal Saint-Martin and target markets
The ban could be in force on the banks of the Seine or the Canal Saint-Martin, very busy at aperitif time, but also on open markets, in certain parks and gardens, in shopping streets or even near the stations where many travelers meet "who have often hastened to remove their mask after having kept it throughout their journey", underlines the assistant of Anne Hidalgo. For the time being, the list of the different areas where wearing a mask will be compulsory has not yet been finalized. The City of Paris wishes to seek the advice of the mayors of the arrondissement to take a decree in accordance with the realities on the ground. “Wearing a mask is painful, especially when it's hot. But if the areas in which it will be made compulsory are intelligently and finely defined, Parisians will wear it, ”says the deputy.
The City hopes that the wearing of the mask will be made compulsory in the coming days.
