You can no longer pay in cash on the Buenos Aires highways: from August 28 it will be mandatory to use TelePase

For two years there has been a project to eliminate the toll booths of the Buenos Aires motorways , generalizing automatic collection systems. But the coronavirus pandemic accelerated the plans: from August 28 it will be mandatory to use Telepase and you will not be able to pay more in cash. This was announced by the head of the Cabinet of the City Government, Felipe Miguel, in the report of the first stage of management that he presented this Tuesday to the Legislature.

"This is a priority health measure, which aims to reduce the risk of contagion in the toll booths," Miguel said in his speech.

The official also gave some details. He said that 60% of highway users are already attached to the Telepase. And he explained that the rest can join for free .

60% of highway users already have TelePase installed.

In this way, the TelePase will be the only form of payment to circulate on the 25 de Mayo, Illia, Perito Moreno and Dellepiane highways. After August 28, drivers who do not have it will have to pay a penalty that will be double the corresponding manual rate.

What will happen to the employees of the toll booths? "I want to bring peace of mind to the workers: we are going to guarantee all sources of work, " said Miguel.

According to the City's Transportation Secretariat, currently 53,000 transactions are carried out in the booths per day. With the mandatory Telepase, all exchange of notes or coins will be eliminated, something that in times of pandemic increases the risks of contagion.

The TelePase also means saving time, because it is not necessary to stop or lower the windows in the cabins, and money, because those who use this system have a 10% discount on the rate of the Buenos Aires motorways and up to 30% on the motorway network.

With the Telepase the rate is paid with a 10% discount in the City and up to 30% on the national highway network.

The TelePase can be processed for free through the web, by WhatsApp (11-2372-7757); in special cabins that will adapt to tolls; or in more than 300 accession points that today are enabled as essential businesses. The user can register by completing their personal data and those of the vehicle. A few hours after registering, you will be able to drive on the highways, whose cameras will read the patent number.

The TelePase device is shipped free by mail at home. It takes less than a week to arrive. Once received, the user must install it on the windshield and activate it at www.telepase.com.ar/recibimitelepase.

With this system, only the effective passes of the vehicle are paid. Payments can be made by card or cash. In the latter case, you must download the invoice from the website to pay it in Mercado Pago, PagoMisCuentas, Rapipago or Pago Fácil.

Health and safety personnel who carry out essential tasks will continue to be exempt from paying tolls.

The Buenos Aires Government's "Freeways without barriers" plan sought the elimination of toll booths and the implementation of "free flow". This system has porticos with cameras and radars that read patents and TelePases and leave them registered. Last year, Paseo del Bajo became the first Buenos Aires highway without barriers. The goal was to extend the system to all others by 2021.

The pandemic hastened plans, although TelePase does not remove barriers like the other system. When approaching, the driver should slow down and if the reader detects the TelePase, the barrier rises.

In his presentation to the Legislature, Felipe Miguel also made a management report on health, social situation and human development, education, security, urban hygiene, transport and mobility, citizen care, culture and economy.
