The Egyptian prosecution announced on Wednesday the opening of an investigation into allegations of meeting rape in a large hotel in Cairo in 2014, which appeared on social networks last month.

The prosecution said in a statement to have "received a letter from the National Council of Women, accompanied by a complaint lodged by one of the women who were sexually assaulted by several people at the Fairmont Nile City Hotel in Cairo in 2014" . The press release also refers to "testimonies from people with knowledge" of this case. The results of the investigation will be made public "in due course" . An allegation of meeting rape at a five-star hotel in Cairo, which appeared on a highly followed social media account, has sparked new #MeToo surges in very conservative Egypt.
Six men involved
The alleged assault occurred in 2014 in this establishment, where a group of six men were drugged and raped several victims, according to the account Assault Police ( "Police harassment" ). The names and photos of the respondents, all from wealthy families, circulated online.
The Fairmont Hotel said last week it investigated the charges. "We can confirm that this incident has never been reported to the hotel or the Tourism Police , " Yara ElDouky, Fairmont communications director, told AFP, adding that the staff was available to investigators.
