(CNN Spanish) - The Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) reported on Wednesday that its president, Jesús Berardinelli, passed away.
"We fulfilled the painful duty to report that Ing. Jesus Berardinelli QEPD, who was president of the FVF, has died today," the highest body of Venezuelan soccer said on Twitter. "To his family and friends we extend our heartfelt word of regret for such a painful loss that national football mourns."

On July 27, the FVF had issued a statement wishing Berardinelli a speedy recovery.
"We all advocate together so that you can overcome your current state of health," said the message.
Berardinelli was appointed as president of the federation on January 6 of this year, as successor to Laureano González. Prior to that, Berardinelli was the vice president of the body.
