"Wearing a mask is not the alpha and omega of protection",the Minister of Health was irritated on March 22, entangled in the controversies born of an embarrassing shortage. Less than six months later, Olivier Véran's position has changed a lot. Rather than mocking him, making fun of the inconstancy of our leaders, we should especially rejoice. Masks alone won't solve everything, that's understood. Still, making them compulsory in closed public places throughout France, and even outside now in more and more cities, is a step in the right direction. At a time when the number of new cases of Covid-19 is slowly rising again across France, the mask is perhaps the most effective weapon to stem the epidemic. And the least expensive. It's not comfortable to wear, everyone agrees, especially in summer, but it's a very low price to pay if it can save us from further general containment this fall.
