A vegan political party announced Thursday August 6 that it had obtained the 20,000 or so citizen sponsorships needed to stand for the first time in the parliamentary elections in Denmark. “ At this precise moment, Veganerpartiet (the party of the Vegans, ndr) obtained 20,182 sponsorships. We have achieved our goal! He congratulated himself on his Twitter account.

Founded in 2018, this movement will therefore be able to compete for the first time in the next main Danish elections, which must take place no later than 2023. On its website, the party presents itself as “ the new green party of Denmark ” and bases its ideology on " vegan thought " which considers that " all species have, like the human species, the right to live freely " and not to " suffer ".
Abolish breeding
In the next elections, the party will campaign around an essential idea: to abolish breeding. " We want all breeding aimed at benefiting humans to be banned, " Lars Corvinius Olesen, spokesperson for Veganerpartiet, told AFP. Asked about their hopes to change Danish policy on this point, the activist assures us that their “ existence in the political sphere will create the debate, and will make it evolve ”.
“ The interest of animals is a topic that no other party in Denmark is carrying, ” he added, arguing that Veganerpartiet was the only “ green party ” in the country. According to Mr. Corvinius Olesen, “ you cannot claim to be an environmentalist while supporting the agricultural industry ” or eating meat or any other animal product. To be able to stand in the legislative elections, a total of 20,109 sponsorships are necessary, if the party does not already have a deputy. These must then be validated by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior of the kingdom, which has about 5.5 million inhabitants.
