(CNN) - Netflix posted a thread on Twitter explaining trans issues in "The Matrix," after one of its co-directors confirmed earlier this week that the film was an allegory of gender transition.

Lilly Wachowski, who co-wrote and co-directed the film with her sister Lana Wachowski, spoke to the service about the intent behind the sci-fi film in an interview posted to YouTube on Tuesday.

Both sisters came out as transsexual several years after the hit movie was released.

Speaking 21 years after the first installment of "The Matrix" hit our screens, Wachowski said the story was "all about the desire for transformation," adding that it came from "a closed point of view" because the corporate world doesn't. he was ready to hear the message at that moment.

For years, fans of THE MATRIX have discussed the film through a trans lens. If you've heard the theory before or just learned about it, here's a thread breaking down the trans allegory of the film, from trans writers and critics.

Following his comments, Netflix wrote about the allegory in a series of messages posted to Twitter on Thursday, drawing on insights offered by writers and critics.

The thread cites the main character of the film, Neo, as a good example of the transsexual narrative.

"Upon 'waking up,' Neo begins his transition from an identity - Thomas A. Anderson, a name given to him by the machines - to a name of his own choosing, Neo, the Chosen One," says a publication.

Netflix also mentions the use of pills as part of a larger allegory.

In one of the most famous scenes in the film, the rebel leader Morpheus offers Neo a red pill or a blue pill.

Neo decides to choose red, which will allow him to see the truth, rather than blue, which will keep him in the dark.

The pill is your "gateway to seeing the world as it is and the systems built to define and control your identity" and it is also "a suitable metaphor for hormone therapy," says a message on the thread.

Wachowski said she was glad people were talking about the trans narrative in the "Matrix" movies.

"I love how meaningful those movies are to trans people and the way they come up to me and say, 'These movies saved my life,'" Wachowski told Netflix.

The upcoming "Matrix 4" will see the return of original cast members Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. It will be directed by Lana Wachowski.
