41 men and women arrested including 5 middle school students and 2 junior college students

Senior Superintendent Wu Guozhang of the Narcotics Bureau said that the police found criminals selling drugs online, the situation is rampant and the number is on the rise. In June of this year, the police sent detectives to release snakes, pretending to buy drugs on social platforms and approaching the target person. After investigation, the police launched an operation from August 4 to 6, arresting 37 men and 4 women for three consecutive days. The arrested persons ranged from 14 to 45 years old, including 5 minors.

The 41 men and women were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, including 5 middle school students, 2 college students and 18 people who reported unemployed, some of them have triad background. One man was charged with drug trafficking and appeared in court today, and most of the other arrested persons were released on bail pending further investigation. According to the police, two of the arrested persons were arrested for criminal damage in the anti-amendment incident last year. It is still necessary to investigate whether the funds are related to the anti-amendment movement. During the operation, the police seized 5.1 kilograms of marijuana, 264 grams of Kate and more than 200 ecstasy pills, with a market value of about 1.32 million yuan.

Openly put drug information on Instagram and Facebook

Wu Guozhang said that under the epidemic, traditional drug-selling bars and entertainment venues were closed, and drug criminals used online platforms as drug trafficking media and tools to openly place drug information on popular platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Telegram, and peddled them at clear prices. Wu Guozhang emphasized that the use of social media is very widespread, and users can reach different types of people, including young people who have contact with drug dealers and trade. He described the situation as worrying.

The Chief Inspector of the Narcotics Bureau, Ye Xiulan, pointed out that the police found a large number of marijuana posts and links on the platform. Popular platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Telegram circulated many keywords related to marijuana, including "420" and "smoker" marijuana terms. The keyword "stoner" has over 5,000 posts.

Ye Xiulan said that drug criminals will upload pictures containing keywords, so that buyers can easily search for posts, including words such as "new goods on shelves" and "personal delivery". The police found that toxic criminals set up a Telegram group to contact buyers, and some groups uploaded pictures and texts to introduce the teaching of marijuana cigarettes. In order to attract young people, some criminals changed the cartoon characters to reduce the young people's guard against drug abuse.

Require social media companies to delete relevant illegal posts

The police pointed out that the main drug seized in this operation was marijuana. In recent years, marijuana users in Hong Kong have begun to become younger. It was recently announced that in 2019, the number of young people under the age of 21 in Hong Kong who smoked marijuana increased by 48% over the previous year. In the first half of this year, 68 people were arrested for marijuana use, 24 more than the same period last year.

Wu Guozhang pointed out that the reason for the rising trend of smoking marijuana is related to the legalization of marijuana in Canada and other countries in recent years, which makes many people underestimate the harm of marijuana. Regarding the situation, the police required social media to do a good job of checking, and the police required social media companies to delete relevant illegal posts. The police will strengthen online and school publicity, to reduce information to young people about the dangers of marijuana smoking to their physical and mental health.
