The government announced earlier that it would postpone the election of the Legislative Council for one year, and has asked the Central Committee to deal with the issue of the Legislative Council vacuum period in the coming year. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress will meet tomorrow (8th). One focus will be whether the four democratic legislators who were disqualified from the election by the Returning Officer can be extended in the next year's vacuum.

In an interview with the newspaper, the vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and former chief executive Liang Zhenying believed that the four current MPs, namely the Civic Party Yang Yueqiao, Guo Rongkeng, Guo Jiaqi and the accounting community Liang Jichang, “should not pass the “vacuum” of the Legislative Council in the next 12 months. Liang Zhenying explained that the four people were DQ because they could not become members of the Legislative Council in accordance with the law, that is, they violated and did not support the Basic Law, demanded foreign sanctions on Hong Kong, and were not loyal to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They believed that DQ had nothing to do with the election, "but these People should not become members of the Legislative Council." He believes that no matter whether the members of the next year need to be elected, four people are not eligible to become members.

Leung Chun-ying, the former secretary-general of the Hong Kong Basic Law Advisory Committee, pointed out that the Basic Law clearly states that the term of office of Legislative Council members is four years and will end when the term expires. "It will not automatically become a five-year term because of the epidemic." He believes that if a provisional legislature can exercise its power and normalize Hong Kong's operations as much as possible, it is one of the solutions to the vacuum period.

Regarding democrats who went to foreign parliaments earlier, they were criticized by the establishment for demanding foreign sanctions on their governments. Leung Chun-ying pointed out that Hong Kong used to "connivate a group of such people" for a long time, but emphasized that there is no one in any society in the world. Members of their own legislature can ask foreign governments to impose sanctions on their own government. He believes, "Now it is a very light punishment for DQ not to let them elect the Legislative Council. In many societies, this is a criminal offence and can be imprisoned."
