Cuba re-imposed strict lockdown measures in the capital, Havana, today, after the outbreak of the new Corona virus, and ordered the re-closure of restaurants, bars and swimming pools, stopped public transport and banned going to the beach.
Reuters quoted Cuban Health Minister Jose Angel Portal as saying during a daily press briefing on the Corona virus today, "We are witnessing a new epidemic outbreak that puts all our citizens at risk."
In turn, the Ministry of Health announced in a statement today the registration of 59 new cases of the virus during the past twenty-four hours and said that the situation is likely to get out of control if the authorities do not take quick measures.
Cuba, which was praised as a rare success story in Latin America for its commitment to recommendations to contain the outbreak of the Corona virus, had eased isolation restrictions last month after the daily infection rates in it decreased to a small number, but during the past two weeks, those rates returned to their levels last April.
Thanks to the free, community-based health system in Cuba, along with measures such as the complete isolation of the injured and their contacts, the country has kept the number of injuries below 2,900 and 88 deaths among its population of 11 million.
