The city of Beirut has seen many demonstrations. From Hezbollah supporters cheering for their leader, Hassan Nasrallah, who calls for the destruction of Israel, through the Lebanese masses mourning the assassination of their prime minister, Rafik al-Hariri, in the spring of 2005, to last winter, before the outbreak of the corona crisis, Lebanese youth protesting Reforms and change.

But it is doubtful whether Beirut saw a worthy and justified demonstration like the one that erupted yesterday in the call "Corrupt are fed up", and in the lawsuit that those responsible for the explosion in Beirut port, which brought disaster to the city and its residents, will give the verdict.

Beirut reported that the government was quick to arrest the port director and some of his aides, but the protesters are unwilling to settle for that and demand that all the country's leaders, the same corrupt and rotten elite that has ruled Lebanon ever since, be brought to justice.

These include Hezbollah and, first and foremost, its leader, Hassan Nasrallah. His representatives have been in government for about two decades, controlling cases of importance and weight, and now Nasrallah dares to claim that he did not know, hear or see anything. In his speech on Friday, Nasrallah even tried to divert the discussion from the port of Beirut to the port of Haifa. But the Lebanese, and even his own community, Israel is not interested at all. What matters to them is their own lives and their future that have become, thanks to Nasrallah and his group of companions, unbearable and in danger.

It is no wonder that the demonstrations were not reported at all on Hezbollah's al-Manar channel, further proof of the "credibility" of the organization and its leader, who in Israel are so fond of praise. Al-Miyadin, another Hezbollah-controlled channel, reported that the Zionist lobby in Washington was behind the demonstrations in Beirut. It is no wonder that Hezbollah members tried to forcibly disperse the protesters, and there were even those who opened fire on them.

However, this spontaneous protest has no leaders or leading organizing power, nor does it have a concrete purpose other than the slogan of removing the corrupt and changing the system. It is therefore difficult to assume that what the demonstrators in Lebanon failed to achieve in previous times - they will now succeed.

In front of the protesters, Lebanese politicians are throwing their regular joker: the resignation of the government and a call for elections. They know that after the election they will return strengthened to their positions of power. After all, Lebanon is an ethnic and tribal society, divided and divided. Although the protest has a sectoral face - the Christian elite and perhaps even the Sunni in Beirut, it is not shared by the Druze in Mount Lebanon and even the Shiites in the Lebanese Valley and in the south. Those have a full stomach for Nasrallah, but on the day of command, with no choice and no alternative, they will continue to support him.

Still, the figure of Nasrallah on a hanging pole in the streets of Beirut should not be underestimated. Is this the beginning of the end? It is difficult to know, but surely the end of the myth of the Lebanese defender, and of a sophisticated and invincible politician. In any case, this has to make Nasrallah an injured and wounded animal, and his weakness may impair his judgment.
