Eight people, including six French civilians, were killed in an attack by gunmen in a nature reserve in Niger, the governor of the Tilabri cycle said today (Sunday). According to him, the gunmen arrived riding motorcycles to the Cora Reserve, which is about 65 km from the capital and where giraffes live. Two other locals, who were the group's guide and driver, were also killed.

French President Emanuel Macron's office confirmed that French civilians were killed in Nice. R. was also reported to have spoken by telephone with Nigerian President Muhammadu Isufu, but no further details were provided. The Nigerian government has not yet responded. France warns its citizens against traveling to large parts of the country, where terrorist organizations Boko Haram and ISIS operate.

The Beam Giraffe Reserve is a tourist attraction in Niger. The large country is bordered by seven different countries, in the wild Sahel region, including Libya, Mali, Chad and Nigeria. In October 2017, four American soldiers were killed in an ISIS attack in Niger, following which increased attention was drawn to US counter-terrorism operations in the region.

France, formerly colonial control of the region, formed a coalition of countries from West Africa and Europe in June, to fight the terrorist organizations in the region, including Niger. It sent thousands of troops to the arid area south of the Sahara in 2013, following a jihadist takeover of parts of Mali, but ISIS and al-Qaeda terrorism has only intensified.
