When Alexander Ginzburg injected his vaccine against the coronavirus, he didn't even start testing on monkeys. Four months later, he still feels great, says the microbiologist and director of the state-owned Gamaleja Institute in Moscow. Around a hundred employees were also vaccinated, voluntarily. All well.
Ginzburg is working on a so-called vector vaccine in which genetic material from Sars-CoV-2 is incorporated into a harmless carrier virus in order to stimulate the formation of antibodies in humans and to build up immune protection. The 68-year-old doesn't want to know that it could be daring to administer an active ingredient that is currently being developed. "I want to protect myself and my employees." His vaccine is safe and effective, he claims. After all, he has already successfully developed a vaccine.
The Russian government now wants to allow Ginzburg's funds as quickly as possible. In the Ministry of Health, it is said that a decision could be made within a few days. If the vaccine is waved through, Russia's doctors and teachers should get it first. It is unclear whether vaccination will also be voluntary for them.
