Overturned on Isar with a rubber dinghy: water management office warns of boat tours on the Isar

According to the police, a 39-year-old Tölzer had taken a boat tour on the Isar with his two daughters aged eleven and fourteen . The wild river still has plenty of water after the heavy rain at the beginning of last week. This is also due to the fact that the Weilheim water management office wants to quickly lower the six-meter water level in Sylvensteinsee back to the usual summer water level.

Therefore, the amount sold to the Isar was increased. In the meantime, 150 cubic meters per second flowed into the Isar , at the weekend it was still 40. For comparison: A week ago it was only a good 12 cubic meters. In addition, the river brings with it a lot of dead wood, which is sometimes invisibly stuck under the surface of the water. Not least because of this, the water management authority urgently warned against swimming in and boating on the Isar at the end of last week. In Munich there was even a general ban since Thursday.

Boat tour despite the flood on the Isar: Father saves himself on rocks

The Tölzer nevertheless got into the rubber dinghy with his daughters and got into trouble at the so-called Isarburg near Schlegldorf. The boat capsized. Fortunately, the two girls were able to save themselves on the bank. The 39-year-old clung to a rock in the Isar. His luck: A subsequent boat saved the man and brought him to shore. He and his two daughters were unharmed.

"We strongly advise against sailing the Isar at this water level."

Gabriel Hartl, head of operations

Meanwhile, the rescue operation had already started. “In the end, we didn't have to intervene,” says water rescue operations manager Gabriel Hartl from the Tölzer water rescue service. “The three of them were definitely very lucky. That could have turned out a lot worse. ”Especially because“ the boat wasn't necessarily a professional boat and none of the three were wearing protective equipment, ”says Hartl. It remains to be seen whether the latter will have consequences. After all, the District Office's boating ordinance, which has been in force since last year, states that “children up to the age of 12 must wear suitable life jackets”.

In any case, Hartl hopes that many recreational captains will stay on the shore for the time being. "We strongly advise against sailing the Isar at this water level."
