Scientists from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases were finally able to decipher how the immune system malfunctions in severe cases of the emerging coronavirus.
The scientists found, through a study published by the specialized "Times News Now" website, that severe cases of "Covid 19" not only lead to an overactive immune system, but also to enter the body in a continuous response cycle of stimulation and suppression, which exhausts the immune system and stops its work.
The scientists evaluated blood samples taken from 53 men and women with corona, in addition to blood samples from patients with other viral infections in the respiratory system and samples from healthy individuals as controls.
They found that in severe cases of "Covid 19", the immune cells in these patients are only partially activated and do not work properly.
"In conjunction with monitoring important proteins on the surface of immune cells, we were able to decipher the changes in the immune system of patients with Covid 19," said Birgit Soitsky, a co-author of the study.
