Patrick Baudouin: "It would be inconceivable that our fellow citizens benefit from impunity"

2020-08-09T18:16:27.819Z

INTERVIEW - The Honorary President of FIDH, also a member of the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights, reacts to the opening of investigations for “genocide and crimes against humanity” carried out on French jihadists.

LE FIGARO. - How do you react to these first investigations on French jihadists?

Patrick BAUDOUIN. - These surveys are essential. First of all because it is a question of respect for the Yazidi victims or their families when they were murdered, who testified under very difficult conditions. Women, who have suffered a lot, agree to become civil parties, to testify one day in court. They have been tortured, imprisoned, sold like cattle, some have been killed because of a clearly established and written program by the Islamic State.

In terms of prosecution, legal possibilities are also limited: the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction and local courts do not exist or are unable to judge. However, it would be inconceivable that French citizens, who left to join the Islamic State and contributed in one way or another to these crimes, enjoy impunity.
