One Hundred Detainees After Mass looting in Chicago (Reuters)

More than a hundred people were arrested after a night of riots and looting in Chicago, during which 13 police officers were injured. The upscale shopping mall "Magnificent Mile" suffered heavy damage, but police chief David Brown said today (Monday) that these were not organized demonstrations, but a "pure crime" that began following police firing a day earlier in another neighborhood in the city at a suspicious person.

At one point, shots were fired at police officers, who returned fire. He said police are expected to deploy with increased forces in the city center, pending a new announcement. The detainees are suspected of looting, disorderly conduct and assaulting police officers. "They follow social media and we located a post about a convoy of cars making its way to the city center and looting," he said. Parking lots were filled with glass and objects from looted shops.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the city ran a neighborhood protection program, "until our neighborhoods are safe. It was an attack on our city." Many looted businesses have only recently reopened, following stormy demonstrations that erupted in the city following the killing of George Floyd on May 25 in the city of Minneapolis.

"Obviously it was organized," said Catholic pastor and prominent social activist Michael Pippler.

Following the riots, downtown train and bus services were temporarily shut down and bridges over the Chicago River were raised to prevent more people from entering the area as Illinois State Police forces closed several exits into downtown. In the morning today, the traffic returned to the series.

Chicago and its suburbs, like many other cities in the United States, witnessed riots following the killing of Floyd, a black detainee strangled under the lap of a white police officer.
