President Donald Trump abruptly left the meeting room moments after beginning his coronavirus briefing.

In the middle of a sentence, a Secret Service agent whispered something to the president before he left the room.

"Sir, we're just going to have to get out," the agent is heard saying. "Excuse me?" Trump asked.

"Get out," said the agent. "Oh," Trump said before leaving the room.

CNN reporters at the White House report that the complex has been closed.

Moments later, he returned to the podium and told reporters that he had been escorted out of the briefing because there was a shooting outside the White House.

"I would like to thank the Secret Service for always doing their job quickly and very effectively, but there was an actual shooting and someone was taken to the hospital. I don't know the condition of the person. It appears that the person was shot by the Secret Service, so We'll see what happens, "Trump said.

A senior administration official confirmed to CNN's Dana Bash that there was an active shooter and that the shooter is in custody .

The incident occurred in the corridor of 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, outside the White House grounds near Lafayette Park.
