The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed today that Beijing is not interested in the US presidential elections and has never interfered in them, in response to a statement by a US intelligence official in which he said that China is "strengthening efforts to influence the elections."
"Some American individuals should stop dragging China into the internal affairs of the United States, urging them to be responsible for their credibility and the image of their country, and stop slandering China," Xinhua quoted ministry spokesman Zhao Li Jian as saying at a press conference.
"We are committed to developing non-conflict, non-confrontational, mutual respect and mutually profitable cooperation," Jian added. "We firmly protect our sovereignty, security and development interests."
