There has been speculation about the political future of Berlin's Prime Minister Michael Müller for a long time. It now seems clear where we are headed.

Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's governing mayor and SPD state chief Michael Müller will in all likelihood move into the Bundestag as a candidate for the SPD district association Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.

The German press agency learned from party circles on Monday that Müller would like to announce his candidacy for the constituency of the same name during the course of the day. The "Tagesspiegel" had previously reported on it. The exact time was still unclear. In the afternoon (4.30 p.m.) a regular switching of the SPD state executive was planned.

The chairman of the district association, Christian Gaebler, who is also head of Müller's Senate Chancellery, told the "Tagesspiegel" that the candidate situation would be clarified on Monday. Müller has been head of government in Berlin since 2014, and in the red-red-green coalition since 2016. The 55-year-old's political future had been speculated for a long time. The Bundestag and the House of Representatives will be re-elected in autumn 2021 - probably on the same day.

On Friday, Müller had publicly signaled interest in running for the Bundestag election for the first time. "We will discuss this together in the party over the next few days," he told RTL / n-tv.

Müller comes from the Berlin district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg. In the constituency of the same name, however, Juso boss Kevin Kühnert (31) wants to run for the Bundestag. Therefore it had already been discussed in the media that Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf could be considered as an alternative. There, however, Miller’s State Secretary in the Senate Chancellery, Sawsan Chebli, was recently under discussion as a possible candidate. The SPD direct candidates in the Berlin electoral districts will be determined in the coming weeks and months.

It has been clear for some time that Müller is relinquishing the leadership of the Berlin SPD. On October 31, Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey and the Berlin SPD parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh want to be elected as the new dual leadership.

On December 19, the top candidates for the House of Representatives and the Bundestag elections are to be determined. In general, it has long been assumed that it will boil down to Giffey at the state level, who then wants to become mayoress. Müller could be placed first on the state list for the Bundestag. However, Kühnert also dares to run the top candidate.
