(CNN) –– Kylie Jenner's cameo in the video for Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's new hit "WAP" sparked such a negative response that an online petition to remove Jenner's images has already garnered thousands of signatures. and even led Cardi B to come to her defense.

But the problem goes beyond Jenner showing up walking around in a sexy outfit.

The petition, made on Change.org, calls for Jenner's scene to be taken from the "WAP" video and notes, "The video was perfect until we saw K and I wanted to throw my phone."

The Root writer Danielle Young perhaps best summed up the frustration that some black women felt seeing Jenner, a white woman, in a video that seems to celebrate that black women own their sexuality.

Young posted footage of singer Normani dancing fiercely in the video for "WAP" and wrote that "Normani did ALL of this and Kylie walked down the hall and opened a door."

If that's not a perfect visual indication of Black women having to do the most and white women do the bare minimum to get somewhere, I don't know what is. https://t.co/ZGvbfzQeLs

"If that's not a perfect visual cue that black women have to do more and white women do the least to get somewhere, then I don't know what it is," Young tweeted.

Cardi B responded in a series of tweets that were later deleted. "It's not all about race," he wrote.

Why was Kylie in my music video? He treated my sister and daughter so charmingly at her son's birthday party, "added Cardi B, noting that her husband, rapper Offset, is close to rapper Travis Scott, the father of Jenner's daughter, Stormi.

CNN has reached out to Jenner representatives Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion for additional comment.

For a while there has been a latent annoyance among some black Americans who have complained that women in the Kardashian / Jenner family have often appropriated black culture to benefit their various brands.

Pepsi suspended the airing of a commercial featuring Kendall Jenner handing a police officer a can of soda during a fictitious protest in 2017, after accusations of hijacking the Black Lives Matter movement.

Kim Kardashian West was criticized that same year for appearing with a darker skin tone on the cover of Interview magazine , in which she portrayed the classic look of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Darkening the skin for fashion or social media reasons is known as 'blackfishing', a term that refers to the practice called 'catfishing', in which a person pretends to be someone they are not.

Kardashian West also sparked a wave of criticism for wearing her hair in braids during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

In 2014, Kylie Jenner posted a photo on Instagram of black businesswoman Heather Sanders with hair painted blue.

Months later, Jenner was sporting blue hair extensions, which she was also selling through a partnership with the Bellami company, according to Marie Claire magazine , which noted that Jenner did not recognize Sanders as her inspiration.

Jenner has also been accused of using filler on her lips, a procedure she admitted in 2015, to change the shape of her mouth to look more like a black woman.

In 2016, Khloe Kardashian was criticized for sporting "Bantu knots," another hairstyle associated with black identity, and videos and articles suddenly appeared as if she had invented the style.

Television celebrity Kim Kardashian attends the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards at Barker Hangar on June 16, 2018 in Santa Monica, California.

When Kardashian West set out to "break the internet" by showing off her generous butt for Paper magazine , the image sparked some anger in the black community from those who saw it as a parody of Saartjie Baartman, a black woman who was labeled "Hottentot. Venus "and marketed as an exhibit in a traveling" freak show "during America's slavery era.

Political commentator Sally Kohn wrote an article for The Washington Post about the spread of the Kardashian West photo and raised other examples of how the family fueled anger over racial issues.

Kohn noted that Kardashian attacked her enemies for saying that she does not possess any talents.

"But I think Kardashian does have a talent: exploiting the fetishization of women of color to fill her own pocket," Kohn wrote. “She's like a naked Trojan horse for a devious message: that the rest of us shouldn't argue a lot about sexism and racism because, hey, Kim Kardashian is laughing at that. All the way to the bank.

Kardashian West has evolved since then and in May she spoke out about white privilege and in support of Black Lives Matter.
