Cardi B defends the appearance of Kylie Jenner in her video for "WAP", but behind the outrage there is a story

(CNN) –– Kylie Jenner's cameo in the video for Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's new hit "WAP" sparked such a negative response that an online petition to remove Jenner's images has already garnered thousands of signatures. and even led Cardi B to come to her defense.

But the problem goes beyond Jenner showing up walking around in a sexy outfit.

The petition, made on Change.org, calls for Jenner's scene to be taken from the "WAP" video and notes, "The video was perfect until we saw K and I wanted to throw my phone."

The Root writer Danielle Young perhaps best summed up the frustration that some black women felt seeing Jenner, a white woman, in a video that seems to celebrate that black women own their sexuality.

Young posted footage of singer Normani dancing fiercely in the video for "WAP" and wrote that "Normani did ALL of this and Kylie walked down the hall and opened a door."

"If that's not a perfect visual cue that black women have to do more and white women do the least to get somewhere, then I don't know what it is," Young tweeted.

Cardi B responded in a series of tweets that were later deleted. "It's not all about race," he wrote.

For a while there has been a latent annoyance among some black Americans who have complained that women in the Kardashian / Jenner family have often appropriated black culture to benefit their various brands.

Kim Kardashian West was criticized that same year for appearing with a darker skin tone on the cover of Interview magazine , in which she portrayed the classic look of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Darkening the skin for fashion or social media reasons is known as 'blackfishing', a term that refers to the practice called 'catfishing', in which a person pretends to be someone they are not.

Kardashian West also sparked a wave of criticism for wearing her hair in braids during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.
