If it doesn't rain, the water can become scarce: the people in the community of Lauenau felt this at the weekend, there was no more drinking water from the tap. For people this means one thing above all else.

Lauenau (dpa) - After the drinking water bottleneck at the weekend, the municipality of Lauenau in the district of Schaumburg in Lower Saxony is relying on people's willingness to save water. The situation is manageable, says Georg Hudalla, non-party mayor of the Rodenberg municipality, to which Lauenau belongs.

Around 4,000 people in Lauenau had already reacted to the water shortage on Saturday afternoon, and consumption had dropped by two thirds. According to the water company, savings will have to be made in the next few days.

After the drinking water supply collapsed on Saturday, the situation eased a day later. The water tank ran empty on Saturday afternoon. The problem: In the corona pandemic, people mostly stayed at home instead of going on vacation, so private water consumption has risen sharply, the mayor said. The fire brigade provides water for toilet flushing, for example, that people could collect. Tank vehicles should not be used initially.

However, the weather will remain hot: The German Weather Service (DWD) announced a hot week with temperatures above 30 degrees and lots of sun. While maximum values of around 36 degrees should be reached again on Sunday, especially in southern Lower Saxony, it will cool down in many places on Monday - but only very slightly, namely by around two degrees. Until the weather changes, it will probably take until the end of the week, said a meteorologist. Heat thunderstorms only provided local relief for the drought.

This complicates the supply in places like Lauenau. Because the local water supply comes from three superficial sources in the Deister, a low mountain range, explained Hudalla. The advantage: The water is very clean and free of nitrates. The disadvantage: the springs react quickly to the weather, in this case the drought.

The energy supplier Enercity gave the all-clear for the drinking water supply for the Hanover region. The company pumps groundwater from a depth of 30 meters, said a spokesman. There are fluctuations, but the supply does not run dry. In addition, the company has storage facilities and elevated tanks to absorb peaks in consumption.

The drinking water situation is not only tense in the Schaumburg district. The Garbsen-Neustadt water association also called for economical consumption and warned of "peak utilization of the systems". All customers should consume "well-dosed" water.

Because of the threat of water shortage, the residents of the Simmern-Rheinböllen community in Rhineland-Palatinate should use water more sparingly. This was announced by the integrated control center Bad Kreuznach on Sunday evening. In order to ensure the basic supply of drinking water during the persistent drought, the following activities have been prohibited in the community in the Hunsrück since Sunday: filling paddling pools and swimming pools, watering lawns and garden areas, washing vehicles on private property, cleaning and hosing down courtyards as well as the irrigation of public green spaces and sports fields.
