The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Belarusian authorities managed to prevent a "dangerous escalation" in the country, noting that Russia was following developments in the situation in Belarus during the presidential elections.

"Moscow has been following with interest the developments of the electoral campaign situation throughout the entire period, and despite the attempts of some forces to organize large protests after the conclusion of the vote, the authorities managed to prevent a dangerous escalation," a statement by the ministry said today, according to Russia Today.

The ministry added in its statement: "We are convinced that the choice made by the Belarusian people will allow the continuation of solving the tasks facing the republic and will help strengthen the friendship between our two brotherly countries."

And the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, announced earlier today that the internet in the country was cut off from abroad to stir up unrest at home following the release of the results of the presidential elections that he won.

Earlier today, the Belarus Central Election Commission announced that outgoing President Alexander Lukashenko had won a new presidential term, as the preliminary results of the presidential elections showed that he had won with more than 80 percent of the vote, noting that his rival, Svetlana Tikhanoskaya, received only 9.9 percent of the vote.
