Drug boss "El Mencho" on a wanted poster: Synthetic drugs for the USA
Photo: KC Alfred / ZUMA Wire / imago imagesIs this man Mexico's new drug king? Search posters in the USA show three photos of a middle-aged Mexican with a receding hairline, two of whom have a narrow mustache. The American drug control agency DEA has put ten million dollars on Nemésio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho". The head of the dreaded "Jalisco Nueva Generación" (CJNG) cartel is said to be supplying large parts of the United States with synthetic drugs.
Some media are already comparing "El Mencho" with "El Chapo", the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the US a year ago and is incarcerated in a maximum security prison in the US state of Colorado.
The 54-year-old "El Mencho" has come into the international spotlight because he dared to do something that "El Chapo" and other drug lords have always shied away from: he is said to be responsible for an assassination attempt on the police chief of Mexico City, Omar García Harfuch, be responsible in June. In the attack in the middle of the Mexican capital, two of the official's bodyguards and a passer-by were killed and Harfuch was injured.
