Berlin - The burden on the shoulders of the incumbent Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) must be huge. The SPD has tried three times since 2005 to get back into the Chancellery. It failed three times because of Angela Merkel . In the next federal election in 2021, however, she will no longer run and now the hopes of the Social Democrats rest on Olaf Scholz . Are the Germans just as convinced of him as his party colleagues?

Olaf Scholz as Chancellor: Almost half of the Germans trust him

In a current Forsa survey, the suitability of the Federal Minister of Finance for the post of Chancellor was asked. 44 percent of those surveyed said they thought it was suitable. However, 32 percent think he is rather unsuitable for the office. 17 percent think he wouldn't do a good job as head of government . It is hardly surprising that the polls for Scholz among the SPD supporters are better. Here, 79 percent of those surveyed found it to be very suitable.

But if the Germans were allowed to choose, then the Federal Finance Minister would have a problem. Only 25 percent of German citizens would welcome a Chancellor Scholz . 63 percent would prefer to have another successor to Angela Merkel *. And even among the former SPD voters, the former mayor of Hamburg only got a meager 28 percent.

When asked whether they trust Scholz to trust the SPD *to win back, 64 percent of respondents are critical and do not believe it. 25 percent say that they trust him to do that. The ARD journalist Andreas Cichowicz trusts Olaf Scholz to be the Chancellor, but does not believe that the SPD will get enough votes to even be allowed to appoint the Chancellor.
