Former US President Barack Obama has warmly welcomed Joe Biden's decision to accept Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for Vice President. The 55-year-old was "more than ready for the task," said Obama on Wednesday.

"When you're in the Oval Office weighing the toughest problems and a decision you make that affects the lives and livelihoods of an entire country - you need someone with you who has the judgment and character to make the right decision meet, "said Obama. His former vice Biden made the right choice: "This is a good day for our country. Now let's win this thing."

Former Vice-President and current climate activist Al Gore also welcomed the nomination, tweeted that Harris "made climate change and environmental justice a top priority".

The Democrat Stacey Abrams also commented on Biden's decision. She is considered one of the rising figures in the party, even if she was narrowly defeated in the 2018 candidacy for governor of the state of Georgia. She is currently running a high profile campaign to secure and expand voting rights in the United States. She herself was traded as one of the possible candidates for the Biden ticket, albeit with more of an outsider chance.

"I'm thrilled to support Senator Harris as the next US Vice President," she wrote on Twitter. Biden is assembling a team that can rebuild America and restore faith in the future.

Attack by Trump - "very nasty" and "disrespectful"

Unsurprisingly, the incumbent US president attacked Harris' selection. Donald Trump said in the White House that he was "surprised" by Biden's decision, after all, the black senator had done "very, very badly" in the Democratic primary race. The president also accused Harris of being "very mean" and "disrespectful" to Biden in the Democratic primary campaign.

Regarding the substantive positions of Harris, Trump said he wanted to increase taxes and cut spending on the military. She also advocates the so-called fracking for the extraction of oil and gas as well as a "nationalized" health system.

In the polls, Trump is clearly behind Biden. Now the president is trying hard to portray the Democrats as a "radical left" party.
