Untouched nature on Sark: "We won't let anyone else on the island"
Photo: Swen LorenzThe world is grappling with the effects of the coronavirus, but around 400 locals move around on a tiny island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy as if Sars-CoV-2 didn't even exist. Nobody wears a mask on Sark. Social distancing has long ceased to be practiced. The most popular of the island's three pubs, the Bel Air Inn, is well filled with patrons these days. The school runs without restrictions.
The head of the island, Christopher Beaumont, 63, the so-called seigneur, reports on the phone why his country's ambulance is pulled by a tractor, the Sarker do not pay income and VAT and the island is still proving to be future-proof in the crisis.
SPIEGEL: Tourists from all over the world usually visit your five-square-kilometer island of Sark mainly because of the unspoiled nature. Why has the island been spared the corona virus so far?
