It's a popular beer tent hit, but the text is questionable: A Passau student has started a petition against the Danube song - it is now attracting wide circles.

  • A Passau student causes a stir with a petition - it's about the Danube song.
  • She started a discussion about sexism in beer tents.
  • Now the first city has drawn conclusions.

Update from August 12, 8:35 a.m.: After almost two and a half months, the anti-sexism petition ends on August 15 , which was originally supposed to encourage the ban on playing and singing the Danube song in Passau beer tents . The petition was initiated by a student who was bothered by the misogynistic text of the hit song. There it says, among other things: "My girl, my girl, what are you upset about, Ohohoholalala / It was nice for me and for you, too, Ohohoholalala."

Petition against beer tent sexism: 36,000 signatures collected

This belittling of a rape has nothing to do with cultural property and should not take place that way, explained the initiators. In the past few weeks there were 36,000 supporters for the student's cause. Even after the petition has ended, the commitment against beer tent sexism should not end.

The mayor of Passau, Juergen Dupper (SPD) had promised early, within the meaning of the initiators in the Passau Festival hosts a failure to use the Danube song. Let other cities follow suit. After the end of the campaign, the aim of the opponents of sexism is to ban the Danube song not only from Passau's festival tents but from festival tents all over Germany.

Belittling a rape? The dispute over the beer tent hit draws wide circles: First city reacts

Update from July 8th: In May a petition from  Passau caused a stir. It was criticized that the Danube song played down a rape - and still played in beer tents. The Passau initiative is now drawing circles. The city of  Montabaur  in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate wants to prevent the singing of the song in beer tents in the future. Mayor Gabriele Wieland (CDU) announced this. Passau's mayor Jürgen Dupper (SPD) had also promised the group around student Corinna Schütz his support in June.

A councilor from Montabaur took the Passau online petition as an opportunity to become active herself and suggested that the song be abolished at the local festival . Montabaur's mayor Wieland told the German Press Agency (dpa): "On the initiative of a city council member, we decided that when we signed a contract we would agree with bands that they would not play the Danube song." She assumes that the bands will adhere to it.

By Tuesday around 35,000 people from all over Germany had signed the online petition, according to which the Danube song should no longer be played at public festivals in Passau. In Regensburg, supporters have started a "sister petition" that also speaks out against the song. They see this as a mandate to continue to campaign against sexism at popular festivals, said Schütz.

Dispute over Danube song: is the beer tent hit played down on rape? Now rights holders speak up

Update from June 11th:  In the discussion about the controversial Danube song , the rights holders of a defused version are now speaking . You could understand the concerns, "because we also find the original text more than questionable and would never let our musicians play it", it said in a message from the rights holders Dirk Wöhrle and Klaus Hanslbauer. Singing about violent scenes has no place on any stage, they emphasized.

At the same time, however, they pointed out that this is precisely why they had already changed the corresponding passage in the original text years ago, which deals with the rape of a girl sleeping on the banks of the Danube . The new version had also been registered with GEMA. It is precisely this version that, in her opinion, is played more often than the song with the original text, against which the Passau student Corinna Schütz fights with an online petition . "Of course it is sometimes a bit rough in festival tents, but our text has absolutely nothing to do with violence", said Wöhrle in the message.

There was also a sexism scandal in the Schwerin state parliament. AfD politicians comment on the appearance of an SPD MP - a debate has broken out.

Is the beer tent hit rape played down? "Crass example of violence" - but is petition counterproductive?

Update from June 9th: The Danube song heats people up because the text is questionable (see first report from May 29th). But where does the song come from? “As far as we know, the song is from the 19th century . There is no evidence of who wrote it in the folk music archive. It has also been widespread in our area since the 1930s, ”explains Ernst Schusser, who heads the folk music archive for the Upper Bavaria district in Bruckmühl, to OVB online .

“In fact, there are songs that raise the question: Can you still sing that? Just think of “saw a boy stand a rose”. Goethe wrote the text for it and the picture is about a rape, ”added Schusser. The statement that folk music is sexist goes too far for him. “The Danube song is a blatant example of violence . A de facto rape is described there. That is certainly not typical for folk music. Personally, I wouldn't sing that. On the one hand, I understand the student, at the same time I wonder if you can't get even more people to sing the song if you now bring it to the fore in the media. Sometimes too much attention is not good either, ”Schusser told OVB online.

Is the beer tent hit rape played down? Petition polarized - festival hosts let off steam on Facebook

Update from June 5th: The Danube song divides minds. A Passau student had started a petition because the song would play down rape . Among other things, she wants to prevent the song from being played on the Passauer Dult in the future. The television program  Quer also  dedicated a contribution to the topic, in which people from Passau also had their say - the song polarized: “That's just sexist shit,” said one interviewee. On the other hand, an older lady made it clear: "I don't think that's sexist."

The magazine, which is broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk , also spoke to the initiators of the petition. "I got on with the sleeping woman," quotes Yannick Steinhauer from the song. “There is no room for interpretation, it's just pure rape,” he says indignantly. Corinna Schütz also agrees. “I don't even know how to defend this content,” she said in the TV report.

The version of Mickie Krause is often played. In it the sleeper wakes up and willingly participates. But Schütz does not want to accept that either: "Everyone knows the song, how it actually works, everyone knows how it will go on." More than 25,000 people have signed the petition, but there is also resistance. For example from the Kandlbinder couple , they are festival hosts on the Passauer Dult. They let off steam on Facebook and quote from their post in the cross-post: "Landlords are currently struggling to survive and a student comes along with such a sh * t." many say that the song is about tradition. “I grew up with the song and have heard it a hundred times. I've never thought of rape, ”continues the landlord Kandlbinder.

Petition against Danube song: initiators want to found a citizens' initiative

Update from June 2, 4:20 p.m .:  The initiators of the petition against the Danube song ( see below ) now want to found a citizens' initiative . The response to the “campaign against beer tent sexism” was enormous, said the Passau student Corinna Schütz . So far, more than 23,500 people had participated in the petition. They also received encouragement from representatives of various parties.

In a next step, the initiators want to turn to the Lord Mayor of Passau , Jürgen Dupper (SPD), and ask for support so that in future people will no longer sing the Danube song at public festivals in the Lower Bavarian city . In addition, the establishment of a citizens' initiative is imminent, said Schütz, the timing depends on the Corona-related circumstances.

In addition to very many positive letters from all over Germany, the Group has in Internet a Shitstorm gotten, who personally directed primarily against Corinna contactor. “That goes as far as rape and death threats, ” reported the 22-year-old. She wished that the topic could be discussed objectively.

The Danube song describes the rape of a girl sleeping on the bank. It is sung in beer tents and also by Ballermann star Mickie Krause .

Danube song in criticism: Green member of the state parliament is annoyed with CSU politicians

Toni Schuberl, a member of the Green State Parliament, is particularly annoyed by a comment by the Passau District Administrator Hans Koller (CSU) on the song. The CSU politician had rated a mocking statement against the action in a Facebook conversation as "very good".

Deputy Passau District Administrator explains his view of the Danube song

Thereupon Schuberl asked the deputy district administrator in an open letter: "May I take that to mean that you approve of the glorification and singing of rape?"

But Koller made it clear to the German Press Agency on Thursday: "I don't like the song either." It was an "ancient, primitive drinking song ". He thinks that, given the Corona crisis, there are more important topics than the Danube song. He wanted to express that with his comment.

Criticism of the “Danube Song”: That's the lyrics

Once I walked along the banks of the Danube, Ohohoholalala, I found a sleeping girl on the bank, Ohohoholalala, I found a sleeping girl on the bank.

2. She had her legs stretched far from her, Ohohoholalala, her snow-white breasts were only half covered, Ohohoholalala, your snow-white breasts were only half covered.

3. I fussed over the sleeping one, Ohohoholalala, you no longer heard the rushing of the Danube, Ohohoholalala, you no longer heard the rushing of the Danube.

4. You foolish fellow what have you achieved, Ohohoholalala, you made me a mother in my sleep, Ohohoholalala, you made me a mother in my sleep.

5. Now I have 12 children and yet no man, Ohohoholalala, What do I start with the 13th, Ohohoholalala, What do I start with the 13th?

6. My girl, my girl, what are you upset about, Ohohoholalala, It was beautiful for me and for you, too, Ohohoholalala, It was beautiful for me and certainly for you too.

7. Here you have a penny and go home, ohohoholalala, and wash the frills out with curd soap, ohohoholalala, and wash the frills out with curd soap.

8. I stood on the bridge and waved my hat, Ohohoholalala, Ade, young maiden, yes the number was good, Ohohoholalala, Ade, young maiden, yes the number was good.

9. And the moral of the story, Ohohoholalala, sleeping girls, you don't screw them, Ohohoholalala, sleeping girls, you don't screw them.
