(CNN) - Would you trust a vaccine if Vladimir Putin told you it was safe?

Next question: Would Donald Trump trust a vaccine if Putin told him it was safe?

This is not the space race, it is a global pandemic. However, Putin is trying to claim victory. And while America's medical community has poured cold water on Trump's suggestions that a vaccine could be ready by Election Day, Putin just pulled one out of his hat and named it Sputnik, in honor of the satellite mission he shocked the world in 1957.

Never underestimate the willingness of powerful people to engage in geopolitical propaganda . That's why Putin sent medical supplements to New York this spring, even as the virus took over his own country.

Russia is the country that reported very few cases of covid, before the outbreak was impossible to deny. It is the country where doctors who criticize the government's response fall through the windows.

Transparency concerns are important here

Can you trust a Russian vaccine more than you can trust the outcome of a Russian election? The kind of electoral fraud that Trump frequently alleges, without evidence, occurs in the United States, in fact occurs in Russia, according to democracy watchdogs.

Putin and his interests are routinely supported by an incredible three-quarters of the voters. Three-quarters of Americans disagree on almost nothing.

No American president has obtained much more than 60% of the popular vote in elections in which it has been possible to trace him. Heck, in our strange system we usually give the White House to the person who got the fewest votes. And everyone accepts it.

Trump likes to joke about continuing to serve as president in the future, but to do so, he would have to change the United States Constitution, which seems completely impossible. Not for Putin. Voters helped him change Russia's constitution last month.

During his tenure, Trump has shown great deference to Putin. That could be due to Trump's disdain for the US intelligence community's assessment that Russia tried to help his campaign in 2016 (and is trying to help him win again in 2020). The White House also likes to say that it has been tough on Russia, although there is ample evidence of Trump's willingness to let Putin play alpha.

One example, among many, is his continued interest in bringing Putin back into the leadership group of industrial democracies. The G7, which used to be the G8, expelled Russia after Putin invaded Crimea, which had been a part of Ukraine, in 2014.

You know what else the American intelligence community says Russia is doing? Last month, the National Security Agency (NSA), along with agencies from European countries, said alleged Russians tried to steal coronavirus vaccine research by hacking into computer systems.

In Belarus, alongside Russia, Putin has clashed with former president Alexander Lukashenko, who arrested Russian mercenaries who he said were trying to destabilize the country on the eve of his election. Lukashenko won, received congratulations from Putin, and is in the process of crushing dissident protests.

The vaccine race is a competition

The announcement of a vaccine by Russia, believe it or not, must irritate Trump. Last week Trump said, against the evidence from Western medicine, that there could be an election day vaccine.

“I think we will have the vaccine before the end of the year, certainly, but around that time, yes. I think so, "Trump said last Thursday.

The real timeline, hopefully. But real medical experts told CNN's Elizabeth Cohen that such a deadline is impossible.

"There is no way. There's just no way, "said Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccine expert at Baylor College of Medicine and a CNN medical analyst.

Even if everything goes exactly according to plan, the earliest we're seeing is Opening Day. At the end of January.

How did Russia do this so quickly?  Critics say the country's push for a vaccine is due in part to political pressure from the Kremlin, which wishes to portray Russia as a global scientific force.

There's more here:

Russia has not released scientific data on its tests and CNN cannot verify the safety or efficacy of the vaccine. The New York Times reported that the Russian vaccine had not completed trials.

Despite this, Russian officials have told CNN that at least 20 countries and some US companies have expressed interest in the vaccine.

Don't take shortcuts . If you're interested in why extensive testing is so important in vaccine development, it's because in this case, billions of people will need to take the vaccine. Read this CDC website on historical vaccine problems. And keep in mind that China has also started using a vaccine on members of its military.

Developing. There are currently 25 vaccines in clinical trials and more than 100 more in development, according to the World Health Organization. Hopefully, it is the safest or one of those that reaches billions of people around the world and returns us to normal. Here's a look at the three you may have heard of.

People in open societies must trust that the vaccine will not harm them. They need to trust that their choices are valid. They must trust that the government seeks their well-being because otherwise they can participate in the process and put someone else in power.
