France warns it is going in the "wrong direction" due to a jump in the number of corona cases in the past two weeks. Prime Minister Jean Casta has ordered local authorities to expand the requirement to wear masks in public, and the ban on a gathering of more than 5,000 people has been extended until October 30.

"The epidemiological situation, which we are following closely, is deteriorating. 2,000 new cases compared to a thousand three weeks ago," the prime minister said at a news conference in the city of Montpellier yesterday. "Every day 25 new hotspots are located, compared to five three weeks ago."

Even today wearing masks is mandatory when traveling by public transport or indoors, such as shops and government offices. Local authorities have the authority to impose the wearing of masks, and some have already done so in open places, such as Paris at major tourist sites and on the banks of the Seine.

More than 30,000 people have already died from the disease in France, which peaked in March and April. The death toll in France remains the seventh highest in the world, although it is far below the United States and Brazil.

Following the national closure it imposed, France eased restrictions in May and June and the tourism industry reopened. Public gatherings of more than 5,000 people, including performances or sporting events, were scheduled to resume at the end of the month but the high morbidity led to the postponement of the move.

This past weekend more than ten thousand people attended an illegal party in a remote mountainous area in the south of France. The prime minister said that if the citizens were not saved, the country would face "a high risk of re-emergence and it would be difficult to control it". According to the French Ministry of Health, the current spread of the virus is particularly pronounced among young people and in cities such as Paris and Marseille.
