Benediktbeuern - The drinking water in the community of Benediktbeuern will continue to be chlorinated and consumers will have to boil it until further notice. "The investigations have confirmed what the quick tests showed last week," reports the Benediktbeurer mayor when asked. According to Toni Ortlieb, the limit values for enterococci, so-called coliforms, and an increased E. coli value were exceeded.
How the contamination came about has not yet been clarified. "The research into the causes has only just begun," says the town hall chief. “We have to know where the weak point is.” To this end, all available records are currently being evaluated. As reported, the non-regular water samples were carried out on the elevated tank last Wednesday after the community had installations made there. The result was available to the water manager on Friday morning, "and he immediately informed me," says the mayor.
Ortlieb: City hall had "taken the right steps"
The town hall then immediately “took the right steps”. The decoction order was distributed via the newspapers and radio stations. However, it is difficult “to reach every multimedia channel in such a situation,” admits Ortlieb after criticizing the commune's information policy. In this context, Ortlieb points out that the community has made all important institutions such as kindergartens, schools and old people's homes as well as food processing businesses and restaurants aware of the decoction order. This persists until the chlorinated water has reached every consumer. To do this, the hydrants on all branch lines will be opened one after the other to flush these pipes. This helps ensure that the disinfected water flows through the entire network. The watering of the football field on Saturday, which is associated with high water consumption, also made an important contribution to this.
