The pedestrian underpass on Münchner Strasse at Gartenstrasse is to disappear. Many in Karlsfeld cannot understand this decision. The Karlsfelder Bauamt opposes this and provides several reasons.

Karlsfeld - If you want to cross the extremely busy Münchner Straße at the level of Gartenstraße in Karlsfeld, you have an alternative: the pedestrian underpass. But to a certain extent it becomes a victim of local development. The 3.6 hectare Ludl site is being built on the west side of the street. The underpass is to be dismantled as part of the construction work. This is what it says in the development plan, which has been legally binding since May (we reported several times).

Some in Karlsfeld are extremely critical of the development of the Ludl site. Among other things, the Bund Naturschutz Karlsfeld. The enormous influx exacerbated the already problematic traffic situation in the area of Münchner Strasse "to a large extent". The BN doubts that the mobility concept developed especially for the Ludl area will help. Criticism came from the local BN group, among other things, because of the reduced parking space key, because of the design of the daycare open spaces (“appearance of a prison”) - and because of the underpass that is being removed. The building of a bridge from Gartenstrasse to the west side of Münchner Strasse, which has been desired in Karlsfeld for decades, is only guaranteed for car traffic at the only remaining pedestrian traffic light, not for pedestrians and cyclists.

At the request of the local newspaper, the building authority in the Karlsfeld town hall confirmed that the underpass had a "low level of acceptance", as stated in the development plan. “Experience has shown that it is used very poorly,” said an employee of the building authority. But above all: the underpass could not stay anyway. If so, it would have to be practically rebuilt. Because the western entrance is in the middle of the street that is supposed to lead into the Ludl area. In addition, the underpass does not comply with current building regulations. For example, it is not barrier-free. If it were designed to be barrier-free, like the underpass at the Würm Canal, a long ramp would have to be built to guarantee the maximum permissible gradient. “There is no space for this,” emphasizes the spokeswoman for the building authority.

For the same reason, the planners rejected a pedestrian bridge. Such a bridge would have to start a long way off in Gartenstrasse and would only end far in the Ludl site.

One last point: the tunneling under Münchner Strasse. Should this major project actually be implemented, the underpass would have to be closed anyway.

The Karlsfeld relief tunnel is classified in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 under the urgency "Further needs with planning rights". The tunnel route would extend from Gartenstrasse to the Würm Canal.

The tunnel has been a wish in Karlsfeld for decades. The fact that the project was included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan was a good sign. “Additional demand”, however, is only the second stage; a classification under “Urgent demand” would have significantly increased the chances of the implementation of the major project. It is therefore still open whether this tunnel will ever be built. Maybe more open than ever because of Corona. Thomas Leichsenring
