Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the date for the summit of the leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council has not yet been decided and that work is underway on the organizational aspects of the meeting.
Lavrov said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Argumente e Facti published today: "Work is underway at the present time on the organizational and substantive aspects of the planned meeting ... there is no specific date yet."
Lavrov indicated that Russia's goal is to reach specific results and not just hold the meeting, and said: “The summit, based on the firm ground of the United Nations Charter, will allow the launching of a serious and direct conversation between the leaders about the principles of interaction in international affairs and ways to solve the most urgent problems of mankind and agree on common rules of conduct. Including with the aim of preserving world peace and preventing large-scale military clashes.
Last June, President Putin proposed the idea of holding a summit of the leaders of the five nuclear countries at the United Nations, which includes Russia, the United States, China, Britain and France, as soon as possible.
