Due to the corona pandemic, many Germans stay on vacation within the country's borders. One travel destination in particular gained interest - and even overtook Sylt.

  • During the corona pandemic, many Germans ended up at the sea in the north or the lakes in the south .
  • Yet another vacation spot in Germany has attracted enormous interest.
  • We'll show you which vacation spots are booming compared to last year.

As soon as the pandemic was proclaimed and travel warnings issued, German travelers had to look around for the perfect holiday destination within national borders. For many, the wanderlust led to the North or Baltic Sea and the island of Sylt *. Miles of traffic jams formed on the autobahns as vacationers pushed their way to northern Germany. But even in the south, many people take a break at Bavarian lakes such as Tegernsee or Starnberger See. But if it's just about the search queries, another holiday destination in Germany has gained a lot of interest in Corona times.

This holiday destination has gained enormous interest - even more than Sylt or the Baltic Sea

The booking portal HomeToGo compared which regions gained in popularity between 2019 and 2020 . The portal for holiday apartments and houses evaluated a total of 35 million search requests on its website in the period from January 1 to July 31, 2019 for the travel dates July and August 2019 and in the period from January 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020 for the travel dates July and August August 2020. The result: Compared to the previous year, the Black Forest made the biggest leap in search queries - a whopping 700 percent more . The holiday destination has thus improved by 289 places in the ranking and even increased more than Sylt, which "only" generated 123 percent more interest. The travel destination Schönau am Königssee was also well sought after, with almost 250 percent more searches compared to the previous year.

In absolute numbers, however, the Baltic Sea has the edge in the evaluation - there were 14.61 percent more search queries than in the previous year. However, since there were a total of 20 percent more search queries compared to the previous year on the booking portal, the interest has not necessarily grown.
