(CNN) - Every August 13 marks International Left-Handed Day, a celebration created by the Left-Handed Club to honor their lifestyle.

The day has been celebrated with right-handed versus left-handed sports matches, cocktails and other activities for those who use the left hand.

In honor of the date, we tell you some information that perhaps you did not know about the accident rate.

About the name

The loss ratio is the formal name of the left-hander and has a whole history.

It is based on the Latin word " sinistra ", which means "to the left." But as time passed, he began to accumulate associations with evil that persist to this day.

Over the centuries, the left-hander has been associated with weakness, impurity or evil. Today, few would consider the lefties among us evil, but they do have to endure numerous inconveniences of a world made for righties.

Left Handed Statistics

About 10% of the world's population is believed to be left-handed, although the number varies by time and place, the researchers say. In freer times and cultures, according to the researchers, left-hander is more common, while in more restrictive times and places, the incidence appears to be reduced.

  • LEE: They identify the genes of being left-handed (and these variants could mean better abilities)

Left-handed racing

In a 1996 study, researchers from Harvard Medical School found that orthopedic surgeons, librarians, and mathematicians were mostly right-handed, while lawyers and architects were, as a group, "the least right-handed or the most left-handed." Other studies have shown that there are more left-handed people working as artists and musicians, and in university settings. Interestingly, more than 20% of Apollo astronauts were left-handed, according to NASA.

  • LEE: Left-handed boxers win more fights, according to a study

Left-handed presidents

Politics aside, it is worth mentioning that at least four of the last seven US presidents have been left-handed: Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George HW Bush and Gerald Ford.

Ronald Reagan also appears often on the left-hander list even though he wrote with his right hand. Some historians suggest that he was born left-handed, but was forced to change as a child.

Why are so many US presidents left-handed?

There is no clear investigation and it may just be a fluke.

But the website leftrightwrong.com presents some theories: politicians are often lawyers, a profession that has one of the highest concentrations of left-handers; lefties are more resilient mentally due to all the tribulations they have to endure in a right-handed world; Lefties have the reputed ability to process language on both sides of the brain.

Left Handers Gains

Research indicates that lefties may have higher rates of high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, schizophrenia, and perhaps even premature death. Turns out, they can also suffer when it comes to the profits they make, according to a 2014 study.

  • LEE: Breastfeeding would play a role in determining whether we are right-handed or left-handed, says study

Economist Joshua Goodman of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government found that left-handed income was 10-12% lower than right-handed people.

That result is in total disagreement with a 2006 paper for the National Bureau of Economic Research, in which economists from Lafayette College and Johns Hopkins University found that “among college-educated men in our sample, those who report being left-handed win 15% more than those who say they are right-handed.

The same was not the case with left-handed women, they said.
