Because he needs a new kidney, a Romanian truck driver smuggled seven kilograms of marijuana across the border. The smuggling trip came to an abrupt end near Mittenwald.

Mittenwald / Munich - He needed money for a new kidney. Therefore, a 37-year-old truck driver from Romania got involved in a drug courier service. His best friend (40) accompanied the seriously ill compatriot in May 2019. The trip ended for both in prison.

They were arrested in Mittenwald. The police found almost seven and a half kilos of marijuana in a specially welded-in floor. The trial against the courier driver and his companion began on Monday at the Munich II regional court. Because of the kidney disease of the main defendant, the proceedings were moved to the high-security hall of the Stadelheim prison in Munich. From there, the 37-year-old could be transferred directly to the hospital ward for dialysis. It was scheduled at noon.

The interrogation of a police officer from Garmisch-Partenkirchen had to be interrupted for an hour and a half. A deal had previously failed. The court had offered both defendants imprisonment between four and five and a half years. In return, they should make “qualified and self-incriminating confessions of a concrete nature”.

But the understanding failed, and so the defense lawyers told the story for their clients. Accordingly, the main defendant was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2015. He was a truck driver in England. After he became less and less concentrated and tired, he had himself examined. He still worked to earn money for a new kidney. 36,000 euros came together, then he had an accident and lost his job.

But because a new organ in his home country cost many times as much, namely 180,000 euros, he felt a certain desperation. “This is how the transport trip came about,” said his defense attorney Christina Keil. The ultimate destination was the Netherlands. The duo started in Valencia, Spain.

Originally, the two of them wanted to drive directly via France and Belgium, but then they made the detour via Italy, Austria and through Mittenwald because they feared being caught at the French border with Belgium. The detour didn't turn out to be a happy solution.

The co-accused 40-year-old allegedly only came to support his friend - mentally and physically. Of course he knew about it, had noticed and also helped when the 15 packages of around 500 grams each of marijuana were stowed in the car.

This hiding place could only be cracked with expert knowledge. As a rule, several combinations of actions such as blinker - horn - windshield wiper are required to open the lock. To make sure that they had found all the intoxicants, the officers borrowed night vision devices from customs. But no other drugs were found. The process is ongoing.
