The Robert Koch Institute is hoping for a vaccine against the coronavirus soon. At the same time, the RKI warns of excessive expectations.
Berlin (dpa) - The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) considers the availability of a vaccine against the coronavirus to be possible this year.
"Preliminary forecasts suggest that a vaccine (possibly several) will be available by autumn 2020," says a position paper that was published on Wednesday afternoon on the Internet.
In any case, it is essential to immediately prepare a nationwide vaccination campaign for the time when an effective vaccine is available.
At the same time, the RKI warns against excessive hopes: "It would also be dangerous at this point in time to trust that the pandemic will be manageable with a vaccination from autumn 2020, since imponderables such as mutations or only short immunity times could put the benefits of vaccinations into perspective," it says it.
