The school starts today in North Rhine-Westphalia. The students expect heat and the mask requirement. Is that reasonable? Demands for heat free are now loud.

  • The summer holidays are over and school is starting again in NRW .
  • Because of Corona this year all students only have to wear a mask and that despite the heat .
  • Therefore, heat-free is now required for everyone - even for high school.

North Rhine-Westphalia - On Wednesday (12 August) begins in NRW the back school . In addition to new subjects and other teachers, students in the most populous federal state in Germany can expect something else this year: the mask requirement . And in the current hot weather it becomes a real ordeal *. City council and schoolchildren are therefore calling for quick remedial action with heat free , as reported by RUHR24.de *.

Start of school during the heat wave: mask compulsory at 35 degrees in August

35 degrees, plenty of sun and room temperatures beyond bearable: Midsummer shows its best side at the beginning of August and brings with it the most violent heat wave of 2020 so far

The weather couldn't be more unsuitable for the students: the summer holidays in NRW will be over  next Wednesday and school will start again. Hours of buffalo in the classroom is then the order of the day.

But the problem is not the teaching itself, but the learning conditions. On August 4, the state government decided that from the new school year onwards, all students were required to wear a mask . And that could become a real ordeal * because of the ongoing heat wave.

Mask requirement for the new school year: elementary school students are lucky - strict rules for high school graduates

At secondary and vocational schools, it is mandatory to wear mouth and nose protection , both in the school building and in class. The mask can only be removed when eating .

For primary school students, the mask requirement only applies on the school grounds and in the building. In class, when they are seated in their fixed positions, first to fourth graders can take off their mouthguards . High school graduates, for example, are not allowed to do that.

Heat-free due to mask requirement for pupils - City Council calls for remedial action for all levels and classes

The City Council of North Rhine-Westphalia is therefore calling for appropriate "relief" for all students in the coming 2020/2021 school year - regardless of their age and class.

"On hot summer days we need more generous heat-free decisions," said the chairman of the city council, Pit Clausen, of the German press agency in Düsseldorf.

The state student council also demands that Wärmefrei must apply to all students in times of the corona mask requirement . After all, the heat does not only affect the secondary school students, so their argumentation.

Heat-free only applies to students from grades 1 to 10 - the upper grades are empty in the heat

Currently, heat-free only applies to elementary school and secondary school students. However, the decision here is not made by the Ministry of Education, but the headmasters decide on the exemption.

The decree says: "As a guide, a room temperature of more than 27 degrees Celsius is to be assumed. If the room temperature is less than 25 degrees Celsius, heat-free may not be granted."

Strict mask requirement only in NRW - older students have a disadvantage during the heatwave in August 2020

For high school students and trainees at vocational schools , on the other hand, no matter what the temperatures are, instruction is mandatory. In times of Corona, however, that is no longer acceptable. The strict regulation of having to wear the mask in class has so far only applied in North Rhine-Westphalia . The North Rhine-Westphalia City Council welcomes the mask requirement in principle. "School with a mask is definitely better than no school at all," emphasized the chairman of the city council and Bielefeld mayor Pit Clausen.

Differences in the federal states: when is it heat-free?

Schools in North Rhine-Westphalia are well prepared for the new 2020/2021 school year despite corona and hygiene

"We are well prepared in the cities for starting school. The school authorities have taken care of infection protection in the schools."

How the school start in North Rhine-Westphalia will ultimately go and whether the heat free for all students regardless of their class remains to be seen. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the current hot weather will last until at least next week. * RUHR24.de is part of the Ippen-Digital network.
