Eng. Yusef Qasim, Director General of the Syrian Foundation for Grains, announced that three modern mills will be established in the governorates of Deir Ezzor, Raqqa and Hasaka, with a flour capacity of 300 tons per day for each, as part of the 2020-2021 plan, which will contribute to reducing transportation costs and securing the stability of the bakery's need of flour.
Qasim pointed out in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that the construction work of Tal Kalakh mill in Homs is nearing completion, with a flour capacity of 600 tons per day, and it will secure the flour needs of bakeries in the governorates of Homs and Tartous. Mineral silos, with a storage capacity of 60,000 tons, which saves freight costs and allows receiving wheat "Dokma" from farmers, as well as securing a good stock for the governorate.
Qasim stressed the continuation of the process of receiving and marketing wheat from farmers in all receiving centers according to simple and facilitated procedures through committees formed for this purpose in addition to the presence of the representative of the Peasants' Union to address any problems that may impede the sale and delivery operations as soon as possible, pointing out that the process of disbursing wheat prices continues to farmers within 48 hours of Marketing process in all agricultural banks.
Qasim indicated that wheat stocks are good and all mills are operating at their maximum capacity according to their production capacity, while wheat import contracts signed in 2019 will be implemented, and new contracts will be announced this year to cover the country's needs.
The area planted with wheat this season is about 1.35 million hectares, with 75 percent of the plan being implemented. It is estimated that production will reach about 2.9 million tons.
