Innsbruck (dpa) - The trial of the killing of five people began on Wednesday at the Innsbruck Regional Court. A now 26-year-old Austrian has to answer for suspected murder. The young man had surrendered after the crime and made a confession.

He is accused of having shot his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, her parents, her brother and a friend of the 19-year-olds in a single-family house in Kitzbühel in October 2019.

At the start of the trial, the defense attorney stated that her client had not acted out of pure jealousy. "It's much more complex," said the lawyer. Her client never learned to articulate his emotional needs and he had a great desire for stability, she quoted from the psychiatric report.

According to the psychiatric report, the accused was disinhibited at the time of the act, at most because of alcohol, but was sane. He is said to have had between 0.6 and 1.65 per thousand at the time of the crime.

The background to the act is said to have been the termination of the multi-year relationship by the 19-year-old in July 2019. The 26-year-old had the weapon and ammunition from the safe of his brother living abroad. The process could end with a verdict on Wednesday. The defendant faces life imprisonment.
