Those arrested tied the animal with a rope and tortured it to the end of its life in the middle of the street

The desperate meows of a cat woke up the residents of a street in Manacor (Mallorca) at dawn last Saturday. At about half past two, one of the inhabitants of a building in the area got out of bed and, looking out the window, observed how in the street a group of four young people had tied a cat with a rope and were attacking it. When the neighbor came down, the cat was already dead.

The National Police, in collaboration with the Manacor Police, has arrested two young people from the town as alleged perpetrators of a crime of animal abuse for ending the life of the cat after subjecting it to torture. In the early hours of Saturday, the four implicated found a cat and tied it with a rope to attack it. At a certain point, according to police sources, one of those arrested began to put his fingers in the cat's eyes until he took one of them out of the orbital basin, ending his life.

The feline's meows alerted the neighbors, who when they went down to the street they found the lifeless animal, which was deposited in a container. After notifying the emergency services, a local police patrol made a first raid in the area to find the perpetrators of the cat's death. Two of them were located and arrested as allegedly responsible for a crime of animal abuse. The investigation remains open to identify the rest of those involved who were at the scene and participated in the torture of the feline.

The Balearic Association of Lawyers for Animal Rights (ABADA) is evaluating the possibility of appearing in the case as a private prosecution if the case ends up being prosecuted. Its president, Manuel Molina, regrets the episode and points out that "unfortunately cases like this are the order of the day." He celebrates that on this occasion there is a witness and the episode of abuse has been reported to the police. In spite of everything, the majority of cases of animal abuse end with punishments that do not involve the imprisonment of the convicted persons.

Since the last reform of the Penal Code, causing injury to an animal to death is punishable by up to one year and six months in jail and a penalty of disqualification from work or keeping animals of up to three years. In the Balearic Islands, ABADA appeared as a popular accusation in the case of the Sorky horse and managed to get its owner into prison after a sentence of eight months in prison for beating the horse to death in December 2012 after a bad race.
