Because of the delay in sending test results, 900 citizens who tested positive did not know about their infections by Wednesday evening. Several opposition politicians at federal and state level now blame CSU boss Markus Söder for the error of the Free State of Bavaria.

Green leader Annalena Baerbock called the breakdown a "serious neglect". She sees Söder personally responsible. "Anyone who as Prime Minister poses as a crisis manager and constantly pats themselves on the shoulder is also responsible for ensuring that it works," said Baerbock. Especially in times of crisis, it is essential for trust in the state that announcement and action go hand in hand. "These errors must be eliminated immediately."

In fighting a pandemic, every day and every case counts, said Baerbock. It should not happen that the state does not act for two weeks, even though someone has tested positive, and certainly not in 900 cases. "This is a grave omission and endangers the health of the individual and the pandemic protection as a whole."

"Söder reveals himself as a pseudo giant in crisis management"

The parliamentary group leader of the Bavarian Landtag Greens, Ludwig Hartmann, spoke on Bayerischer Rundfunk of the "biggest mishap that we have experienced in fighting pandemic in Germany because the effects are not regionally limited".

Left leader Katja Kipping also sharply criticized Söder. "Söder exposes himself as a pseudo giant in crisis management," said Kipping, according to a statement from her party. "As important as the wide availability of free corona tests is, just as important is the careful handling of the results." The responsible administration of the test data and the quick information of the tested require the same attention as the construction of the test centers.

Söder "appeared very wide-legged for months"

The FDP member of the Bundestag and interior expert Konstantin Kuhle spoke in the broadcast "Frühstart" of RTL and ntv of a "blatant government failure of the state government in Munich". Kuhle said Söder had "appeared very wide-legged for months". During the corona crisis, the Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU chief "told other Prime Ministers what to do - now he should apologize to these 900 people."

The state SPD even called for the resignation of Health Minister Melanie Huml (CSU). "Ms. Huml has to resign and Mr. Söder has to explain himself," said the general secretary of the Bavarian SPD, Uli Grötsch in the Bavarian radio. Söder had to "repent because as Prime Minister he simply did not live up to his responsibility and played with the health of the people in Bavaria," he added.

A total of 44,000 return travelers waited for results after voluntary tests at motorway service stations and main train stations. 900 of them tested positive when they returned from their vacation abroad. They presumably come from several federal states. Those affected should be informed by Thursday noon. In Bavaria, travelers can voluntarily be tested for the coronavirus at airports, train stations and highways; this is now mandatory for travelers from risk areas.
