(CNN Spanish) - This Thursday, Darío Vivas died in Caracas, according to the Venezuelan attorney general, Tarek William Saab, through his Twitter account.
Vivas, 70, had announced on July 19 that he had tested positive for the PCR for covid-19 and since then he has been isolated and undergoing treatment.
The questioned government of Nicolás Maduro had appointed him head of the Capital District in January. It is the first death of an official affected by Maduro in the middle of the pandemic.

It was sanctioned by the US Department of the Treasury since 2017.
There are other Venezuelan officials who have fallen ill with covid-19, such as the president of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, who says he has recovered. Also Jorge Rodríguez, Vice President of Communication and Information and Tareck El Aissami, Minister of Petroleum.
In Venezuela there are more than 29,000 cases of coronavirus and more than 245 deaths, according to official figures.
