Wiesbaden (dpa) - The risk of poverty in Germany increased last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, 15.9 percent of people across the country were at risk of poverty on the basis of the microcensus, compared with 15.5 percent in the previous year. The threshold for the risk of poverty in 2019 was 1,074 euros for a one-person household, which is 60 percent of an average household income. Those who have less money at their disposal are considered to be at risk of poverty. Most people were threatened in Bremen with almost a quarter of the population (24.9 percent), least of them in Bavaria (11.9) and Baden-Württemberg (12.3).

How the corona crisis affects the risk of poverty is still unclear. The Federal Employment Agency reported 2.91 million people out of work in July, 635,000 more than a year earlier. In May, 6.7 million people were on short-time work in Germany.
