Organic farmer Bernhard Neumüller tried his hand at sunflowers. It remains to be seen whether the project will work as a whole. But it definitely looked great.
Hechendorf - Such a wonderful sunflower field has never been seen before in Hechendorf. In spring, organic farmer Bernhard Neumüller sowed up to 90,000 seeds per hectare on the 5.6 hectare area behind the Kammerloher Stadl on the outskirts. The effort paid off: Hundreds of thousands of sunflowers provided a splendid splash of color on the outskirts for a good week. Of course, the field is not there for visual pleasure. “I had thought for a long time about what to sow. But organic maize is difficult because of the crow colonies in Hechendorf. If they attack a field, they can damage a hundred plants within a minute, ”explains Neumüller. Ultimately, he chose the sunflowers.
“It's my first attempt and it was a good location,” says Neumüller. Again and again he looked at the field and met walkers. “They were all happy and took photos.” Neumüller had asked on signs not to pick the flowers. "Most of them adhered to that."
In autumn Neumüller wants to produce high-quality oil from the sunflowers. He presumably presses part of it himself, "but I won't be able to do anything". You have to first see how the harvest turns out. Anyone interested in sunflower oil can contact Neumüller by e-mail to sonnenblumen@fraeulein-muellers.de.
Neumüller switched his business to organic in 2017. He cultivates a total of almost 80 hectares around Hechendorf, on which he grows spelled, wheat, oats, peas, barley and lentils.
