Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei broke the 5,000m world record on Friday in 12:35:36, during the Monaco Diamond League meeting. Cheptegei, crowned world champion in the 10,000m in 2019 in Doha, erased the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele from the shelves, whose record dated May 31, 2004 (12 min 37 sec 35).
