These would be 5 failures of Operation Gideon 1:45
(CNN Spanish) - Fifteen people were sentenced to 24 years in prison in Venezuela for the crimes of "terrorism, rebellion and conspiracy" in connection with the so-called "Operation Gideon", Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced this Friday.
Among those convicted is Antonio José Sequea, identified as the leader of the group of an alleged operation that, according to the government, was aimed at overthrowing the questioned President Nicolás Maduro.
In a televised statement, Saab said that the 15 convicts, in addition to two other previously convicted, admitted their responsibility at a preliminary hearing on August 12.
Saab assured that the defendants admitted the facts voluntarily and had the assistance of defense lawyers. CNN did not know or have access to that hearing. Nor was it possible to verify whether they had access to lawyers and whether it is true that they admitted the charges against them.
More than 40 people are detained in Venezuela on suspicion of having participated in this alleged maritime incursion, which the Venezuelan authorities call "Operation Gideon."
On August 8, Saab had already announced on Twitter the 20-year sentences for Americans Luke Denman and Airan Berry in connection with these events.
