BMW left a segment fallow for a long time - much to the displeasure of many fans of the brand. But now everything will be fine with a new model that offers plenty of space and plenty of horsepower.

  • BMW is consistently expanding its range of vehicles.
  • The Munich-based carmaker left a lucrative niche to Audi and Mercedes-Benz without a fight .
  • That should be different now .

Munich - When it comes to lucrative horsepower niches, BMW * doesn't really let anything go wrong. In September, the Bavarian carmaker sends two models with a lot of oomph, the M3 and the M4 Coupé. And because the well-heeled M clientele also like to let the wind blow around their noses, the convertible version with M-Power will be in the showrooms next year.

There is only one model series that BMW M GmbH from Garching near Munich has not yet plowed: the family-friendly 3 Series Touring. That will change. They are working “on another dream that will come true”, drums the Bavarians now via press release. For the first time in history, the model range will be supplemented by a BMW M3 Touring . With the new model one wants to "drive racing-oriented performance and everyday usability to the extreme", promises the group.

BMW: So far there is only the 5 Series Touring in the M variant

The group had long held back in the station wagon market for family mothers and fathers who need a lot of space and want even more horsepower. So far, BMW had only tuned the 5 Series M in the station wagon area. In 2010 there was already a prototype for the 3 Series based on the E46. But in the end, the Munich-based car maker couldn't bring himself to launch the model on the market.

It was different with the German premium competition. Audi with the RS4 and Mercedes-Benz AMG with the T-model had the small but very lucrative combination niche to themselves.

Now BMW is also pushing into the market. The two-year test phase for the BMW M3 Touring will begin in the next few days, a BMW spokesman told Merkur.de *. This would indicate a market launch in spring 2023.

BMW: M3 Touring with all the insignia of the sports car subsidiary

According to the BMW subsidiary, the M3 Touring will be “a real M”, including testing on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife . In addition to wide axles, four exhaust tailpipes and large air inlets at the front, this will also apply to the engine. As in the M3 sedan, BMW * also wants to use the 6-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo here. Depending on the version, the unit brings a brutal 480 or 510 hp to the start. * Merkur.de is part of the Ippen-Digital network.
